WHY WOOLACOMBE?
Once apon a time…
Becoming a great hotel doesn’t come easily, but it is with this in mind that we are working to create a hotel that answers the needs of all the family, without losing sight of it’s heritage and culture.
Much of the Hotel has been lovingly restored from the mid 1800’s, creating it’s unique and tranquil atmosphere. High ceilings, chandeliers and comfortable, quiet lounges are a testament to that era, and where first class modern amenities are required, they have been skilfully incorporated into the existing Hotel.
This luxury hotel in North Devon is superbly positioned between two National Trust headlands, and has direct access to three miles of beautiful, uninterrupted golden sand, blue flag beaches of Woolacombe Bay.
The Woolacombe Bay Hotel was built in the late 1880s, and early pictures show many parts of the existing building have retained their original features. The hotel has enjoyed a long and colourful history and we are delighted that so much of its traditional charm remains today.
The Woolacombe Bay Hotel was sold to Cheltenham Brewery in 1932 and over the following nine years an extensive programme of renovation transformed the building, the work resulted in the Hotel appearing much as it does today and added several notable features – including the ballroom, which showcased the first sprung floor in the West Country.
During World War Two, The Woolacombe Bay Hotel was commandeered by the War Office. It Became home to the 4th County of London Yeomanry, the Southern Command Weapon Training School and American Army soldiers, who remained in residence until the end of the war.
The Woolacombe Bay Hotel returned to life as a hotel after the war and was bought by the Lancaster family in 1978.
Life at this family friendly North Devon Hotel combines the timeless elegance of days gone by with all the special touches you would expect from a luxury hotel in Devon.
There is plenty to do here in Woolacombe, exploring the rock pools, building sandcastles or learning to surf. This family friendly hotel in North Devon is the perfect place to enjoy precious time with loved ones or friends.
