Places to Visit and Winter Events in North Devon

Thinking of a crafty Devon getaway for early 2022? Plan your own escape before Easter and you’ll not only find a whole host of attractions minus the summer crowds but some great low season special offers on short breaks in North Devon. Here are some top attractions and events to look out for in 2022, whether you are looking for romantic places to visit for Valentine's Day, or entertaining family days out:

All Aboard the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway
After a well-earned winter break, this popular railway attraction provides a nostalgic ride for young and old alike. With the bold aim of reconstructing the full Lynton to Barnstaple Railway, this is rail travel as it used to be, on a narrow-gauge track with the chug of a real steam engine! On frosty late winter days, the route is especially pretty too, cutting through some truly beautiful countryside. See the site for more details:

Cool Waters, Spectacular Scenery
There are many scenic spots and heritage sites to visit in North Devon. Even where options such as tours and on-site cafes are closed for the winter, you can still often access beautiful grounds and some fine walks.
Watersmeet is one of the most picturesque of them all, with majestic waterfalls, craggy terrain and wooded trails that are never more peaceful than in the winter and early spring. Meanwhile, facilities such as the tearoom and gift shop reopen again from mid-February onwards. Click here for opening times.

Romance and Fun for all Ages at the Big Sheep
For the most enjoyable of family days out, the Big Sheep in Bideford is getting creative this February. Open on almost every day of the year, with sheltered activities for the worst of days, the February half term looks especially exciting. There’s Valentine’s themed treasure hunt with prizes, as well as the chance for youngsters to make their own cards and watch various shows where the animals take centre stage!  Throw in classic winter thrills such as a skating rink and winter toboggan ride and this is a must for a family day out.
