Whether you're an outdoor pursuits fanatic or a complete novice, it’s always useful to know where you can hire equipment on holiday. Indeed, renting out the gear for your next cycle or paddle adventure could save you a lot of time and hassle when it comes to packing, travel speed and fuel economy.
Here at Woolacombe Bay, the choice is yours. If your own kit is an absolute must, our self-catering holiday lets have stacks of space to stow away your favourite kayak or surfboard securely. But if you fancy avoiding extra hassle, or trying out a new hobby, hiring the essentials is the ideal solution. So, without further ado, here's our guide to where to hire sporting and outdoor equipment in North Devon, from right outside the hotel here in Woolacombe, to nearby activity providers in the surrounding area and Exmoor.
Surf Equipment Hire in Woolacombe
With beautiful surf breaks and the beach repeatedly voted as Britain’s best, why would you want to go anywhere else to surf? We also have H2 Outdoor right on our doorstep, who offer both wetsuit and board hire at very fair rates (you could hire a wetsuit and surfboard for a whole week at just £30!). They will even deliver equipment to your preferred location on the day if you ask nicely (call 07789 807424).
If it’s surfing lessons you want, however, Hunter Surf School are also very close and come highly recommended.
TOP TIP: For just about every hire company and activity going, the longer you hire the equipment the better value deal you get. The same is often true of group sessions compared to individual hire. If you want equipment for a whole group of people, don’t be afraid to ask for a discount.
Kayak Hire in North Devon
For the keen paddler, there are some awesome places to go kayaking in North Devon. Plenty bring their own craft each year, but if you’re travelling a long way, it could be a real time and trouble saver to simply hire once you’re here! Our nearest hire company, right in Woolacombe, is once again H2 Outdoor, who have a good selection of gear to rent out.
Another good option are Surfside Clothing, however, who are based in Combe Martin, another excellent location to try kayaking at sea. Bring a few friends or family and they’re sure to cut you a good deal.
Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Hire
This great hobby is rapidly gaining in popularity, offering fun and exercise across all kinds of locations. It can be pricey to buy your own though, so why not have a little trial first? Surfside Clothing can rent out the gear from as little as £10 for an hour session, with buoyancy aid and the works included. Just see the wesbsite for further Info: http://www.surfsideclothing.co.uk/stand-up-paddle-boarding/
TOP TIP: Rather than making concrete plans, it’s often a good idea to play it by ear (and weather!). For example, if the sea is too calm for surfing, stand up paddle boarding (SUP) is a brilliant plan B.
Bike Hire in North Devon & the Tarka Trail
Another great way to explore the countryside and coast is via two wheels. Bideford Bicycle hire is one excellent source who can provide the gear at reasonable rates, along with handy maps and advice for the Tarka Trail. Book ahead and you can also find a tandem bike or indeed special trailers and tag-alongs for the young ones. See http://www.bidefordbicyclehire.co.uk/
North Devon Segway Hire
For another fun way to get about, segways are becoming more and more popular. Finding your balance on these curious two-wheeled gadgets is certainly a fun part-day outing. Look no further than Woolacombe Bay Holiday village for spring to autumn Segway rentals. Prices start at £19 per hour, but ask about discounts for group sessions and longer rentals: http://www.visitilfracombe.co.uk/see-do/activities/item/470-woolacombe-bay-cinema
TOP TIP: If you are totally new to any sport, why not treat yourself to a half or full day of tuition? Just a few hours with a good coach can give you skills that could otherwise take you months to learn for yourself.
Pony and Horse Riding in North Devon
Ever wanted to ride a horse or pony right on the beach? While you might struggle to hire a set of hooves for the day, there are a few local companies providing pony trekking and guided horse rides. Woolacombe Riding Stables are very near to us and host friendly riding experiences for various abilities: http://www.woolacombe-ridingstables.co.uk
TOP TIP: A good hire company offers a lot more than just equipment. Be sure to ask them about the best locations, routes and tips! If you are renting kit, it is all part of the service- and local knowledge is gold dust!
Sea & Fly Fishing Tackle Hire in North Devon
Fancy a crack at some fishing while you’re here in Woolacombe? The main beach can be quite challenging or busy, so our advice would be to head for local rock marks and harbours for easier access to the cover and deeper water fish prefer. Kayak fishing is another great option, whether you try from Woolacombe or any of the local beaches.
Combe Martin’s Surfside is probably the best place to hire fishing tackle locally, and can advise you on the best sea fishing spots in North Devon.
If it is fly fishing you are in search of, however, you could also head south to Bratton Water, just above Barnstaple. The fishery offers fly rods for hire inexpensively, along with a range of fishing tickets to catch brown and rainbow trout on the fly on a very productive main lake.
