Some of our favourite walks

1. Woolacombe to Croyde

  • Location: Woolacombe
  • Distance: 5 miles
  • Grade: Easy

Walk Description:

This walk takes in two superb blue flag beaches. Starting in the popular resort of Woolacombe, you can choose to walk along the sandy beach or on the sand dunes and cliffs behind for around two miles as far as Putsborough Sands at the other end of Woolacombe Sands.

The walk starts in the small town of Woolacombe. Woolacombe has a few shops and pubs, but the main attraction is the superb sandy beach. The beach holds a Blue Flag, so the beach and water are very clean. The west-facing location of the beach means it gets quite a surf and is very popular with surfers. The beach is around two miles long, so even in the summer, it's always possible to find part of the beach that isn't too crowded.

2. Combe Martin to Woolacombe

  • Start and Finish: From Combe Martin to Woolacombe
  • Distance: 12 miles

Walk Description:

A series of coves, some very beautiful, between Combe Martin and Ilfracombe. Ilfracombe itself has a good deal of nautical history and some ancient pubs, plus a harbour for the fishing industry and the more modern boats.

The town is smart and developed with some lovely beach coves close by. Continuing along the south west coastal path, the route becomes very organised along Torrs Walk and out into open country, with high cliff walking to Morte Point and some very steep stretches before Woolacombe. This section can feel remote, miles from civilisation, though it is popular with day walkers especially in the warmer months.

 3. County Gate, Exmoor

  • Location:  County Gate, Exmoor
  • Distance:  5 miles (8km)
  • Grade:  Moderate/Difficult
  • Circular Walk:  Yes
  • Free from obstacles & steep gradients: No

Walk Description:

County Gate is set on a windy ridge between the East Lyn valley and the Bristol Channel on the A39 between Devon and Somerset.  County Gate is on the Somerset Devon border which is the start of many local and long distance walks.

Here you will find some of the finest viewpoints of the Exmoor coast and these reach as far as the coast and across to Wales and inland over rolling fields to the Doone Valley which was made famous by R D Blackmore's novel Lorna Doone.

4. Woolacombe to Braunton

  • Start and Finish: From Woolacombe to Braunton
  • Distance: 15 miles (24km)

Walk Description:

Very easy flat walking through the dunes of Woolacombe Sands and Braunton Burrows, with a small climb to Baggy Point before Croyde. This beautiful section of Coast Path, also part of the Tarka Trail, is recognised for its wildlife and geological interest. Much of it is managed by the National Trust and it includes some very easy walking along cliff tops with fine views of the route ahead and out to Lundy Island and the Welsh coast.
